GoGen Languages株式会社 (Kabushiki gaisha) was founded in 2023 in Tokyo, Japan to change the way languages are taught and learned.

GoGen Languages株式会社は、言語の教え方と学び方に変革をもたらすため、2023年に東京で設立されました。

Our Mission / 企業理念:

GoGen is an organization dedicated to the cutting edge of language study and acquisition, to redefining the way humans learn.  We are on a mission to bring people together through linguistic and cultural acquisition. 

GoGenは、言語学習および言語習得の最先端を追求し、人間の学習方法を再定義することをめざす企業です。そして、言語と文化の習得を通して、人と人とを結びつけることが私たちの使命だと考えています。

What we do differently / 先進的なアプローチ:

GoGen was created because its founder (a linguist) became fed up with Japanese textbooks and language school curriculum.  Boring, irrelevant, and impractical.  Normal Japanese people don't speak like the books.  In fact, few people speak the way students are taught from textbooks and in language schools in general.

言語学者である創業者は、これまでの日本語の教科書や語学学校のカリキュラムにうんざりしていました。そんなの彼の想いから生まれたのがGoGenです。従来の言語教育は、退屈で、的外れで、全く実用的では無いからです。 普通の日本人は教科書のようには話しませんし、実際には、教科書や語学学校で教わるような話し方をする人は、ほんの一握りしかいません。

That's because language learning isn't just about grammar and vocabulary.  It is about multimodal fusion with another people, another group of human beings.  It is about becoming a part of their world, which means different ways of thinking, doing, and perceiving.  The grammar and the vocab serve to connect us with another group of human beings, although language schools and textbooks would have you think the other way around.

なぜなら言語学習は、単に文法や語彙だけ学習すればいいというものではないからです。言語学習とは、他の人々、他の人間集団と、マルチモーダル的に融合することなのです。それはすなわち、彼らの世界の一部となることであり、異なる考え方、やり方、捉え方を習得することなのです。もちろん文法や語彙は、私たちを別の人間集団と結びつける役割を果たしていることに間違いはありませんが、語学学校や教科書では、そればかりが重要視されていないでしょうか。

Our courses synergize learning into one intensive process of acquisition.  Grammar is necessary to construct language, but culture is necessary to understand it.  Language learning is impossible without structure and context.  In other words, you need to know the mechanics, but you need to know the story behind the words and structures that you are learning.  An example of this context-driven approach is our blog posts on Japanese cultural keywords チャラい (charai) and 告白 (kokuhaku).  

We provide learners with a multilayered experience that works.  The science is complex, but the results are simple.  You learn. 

私たちが提供するコースでは、総合的な習得プロセスが学習に組み込まれています。 文法は言語を構築するために必要ですが、文化は言語を理解するために必要です。 言語学習は構造と文脈なしには不可能です。 言い換えれば、仕組みを知ることも大事ですが、学んでいる単語や構文の背景にあるストーリーを知ることも重要なことです。 このような文脈重視のアプローチの例は、日本文化のキーワードである「チャライ」と「コクハク」についてのブログ記事をご参照ください。

About the Founder and Chief Linguist / 創業者/主任言語学者について:

Linguist Bryan Becker created GoGen because of his own frustration with textbooks and language schools, which offered overly formal, rigid language that native speakers only use in highly specific (often useless) situations.  

言語学者であるブライアン・ベッカーがGoGenを立ち上げたきっかけは、彼自身が教科書や語学学校に、不満を抱いていたことにあります。教科書や語学学校で教わるのは、ネイティブスピーカーが、極めて特殊な、ほとんど実用的でない状況でしか使わないような、形式ばった堅苦しい言葉ばかりだったからです。

Bryan's long history with language learning began when he earned his Cambridge CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults), before setting off to Brazil to study Portuguese and linguistics at the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro, one of Brazil’s top-ranked private universities.   From there, he returned to America and began taking courses in theoretical linguistics at UCLA, followed by studies at the University of Chicago to earn his Certificate in Advanced Translation studies.  He then moved to Germany, where he started studying German and eventually earned the prestigious C2 Goethe Certificate, a globally recognized German proficiency exam certificate at the highest level, followed by enrollment in graduate school at Freie Universität Berlin in Sprachwissenschaft (a.k.a linguistics).  Through his graduate program, he was awarded one of only two positions to engage in research and studies at Keio University in Tokyo, one of Japan’s top-ranked private universities.

ブライアンの言語学習の長い歴史は、ケンブリッジCELTA（成人向け英語教授法認定資格）を取得したときに始まりました。彼はその資格を手にブラジルへと渡り、ブラジルで最も権威ある私立大学のひとつであるリオデジャネイロ・カトリカ大学で、ポルトガル語と言語学を学びました。その後アメリカに戻り、UCLA（カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校）で理論言語学を学び、シカゴ大学で翻訳学の修士号を取得。 その後ドイツに渡り、ドイツ語の勉強を始め、世界的に認められたドイツ語能力検定試験における最高レベルで権威あるC2ゲーテ証明書を取得。その後、ベルリン自由大学の大学院に入学し、Sprachwissenschaft （言語学）を専攻しました。 同大学院課程のプログラムを通じて、日本トップクラスの私立大学である慶應義塾大学（東京）にて、わずか2人にしか与えられない、研究生のポストを獲得しました。

However, due to the pandemic, Bryan’s studies were deferred, and he decided to enroll in language school in Madrid, where he advanced his Spanish to the C1 level. 

しかしながら、コロナ禍の影響により、ブライアンの留学は延期となったため、彼はマドリードの語学学校に入学することを決め、そこでスペイン語をC1レベルまで上達させました。

In December 2020, Bryan was finally able to slip into Japan.  He did three months of Japanese language school, then started his studies at Keio.  At the conclusion of his studies, desiring to further his Japanese skills, Bryan enrolled again in a Japanese language school.  Before long, his frustration with the teaching and the methodology boiled over, and he began creating his own learning materials. 

2020年12月、ブライアンはついに日本に滑り込むことができました。 日本語学校に3ヶ月通った後、慶應義塾大学で研究を開始しました。 留学を終えたブライアンは、日本語を更に上達させたいと思い、日本語学校に再入学しました。やがて、そこでの教授法や方法論に対する彼の不満が頂点に達し、独自の教材を作り始めたのです。

That’s when GoGen was born.  After an 8-month-long process, Bryan was granted admission to the prestigious Tokyo Metropolitan Government Start Up program, which up to that point, had only been successfully realized by a handful of companies in Japan since its inception in 2017.

それがGoGenの誕生の瞬間でした。 ブライアンは8ヶ月に及ぶ審査プロセスを経て、権威ある東京都のスタートアップ・プログラムの認定を受けることに成功しました。2017年のプログラム創設以来、このプログラムの認定を受けることができた企業は、それまで日本国内でもほんの一握りしかありませんでした。

In all, Bryan has studied foreign languages at sixteen different institutions across four continents, including six different university systems and 10 different language schools.  He is trained in teaching, translation, and theoretical linguistics. 

ブライアンは、４大陸をまたにかけ、6つの異なる大学システムと10の異なる語学学校を含む、延べ16の異なる教育機関で外国語を学んできました。 そして、教育、翻訳、理論言語学の専門的な教育を受けてきました。

Current Products / 製品について:

We are well into development on a number of audio-based products (usable just like most audiobook media).  Our first release is scheduled for September of this year, with several additional courses set for the months that follow.  Two of our courses will be available for pre-order soon.  The first, tentatively scheduled for a September release, is Romance and Dating in Japanese.  The second is Talking about Anime in Japanese, with an expected release of October of this year.

現在、数々のオーディオ・ベースの製品（一般的なオーディオブック・メディアと同様に使用可能）の開発を着々と進めています。 最初のリリースは今年の9月を予定しており、その後数ヶ月に渡り、いくつかのコースを追加していく予定です。 そのうちの2つのコースは、近日中に予約受付を開始する予定です。 ひとつは、9月にリリース予定のRomance and Dating in Japanese 。 もうひとつはTalking about Anime in Japaneseで、今年の10月にリリースの予定です。
